What We Believe
The Bahá'í Faith teaches that there is one God, one human family and one unfolding religious truth. Explore the principles that shape our lives and our community.
“The earth is but one country, and mankind its citizens.” — Bahá'u'lláh
Foundational Teachings
Core Principles of the Faith
One God
God is one, unknowable in essence, and the source of all creation. All the great religions worship the same God.
Progressive Revelation
God sends Messengers — Abraham, Moses, Buddha, Jesus, Muhammad, Bahá'u'lláh and others — each renewing the same spiritual truth for their age.
Oneness of Humanity
All people are created equal and belong to one human family. Diversity of race, culture and nation is cause for celebration.
Equality of Women and Men
Women and men are equal. Humanity, like a bird, needs both wings to fly, and peace depends on that balance.
Science and Religion
Science and religion are two complementary ways of knowing the world. Religion without science becomes superstition; science without religion becomes materialism.
World Peace
Lasting peace requires a united world, supported by institutions of justice and cooperation among all nations.
Universal Education
Every child has the right to an education, and the education of girls is a priority for the progress of society.
Economic Justice
Extremes of wealth and poverty must be overcome through justice, generosity and the sharing of resources.
Elimination of Prejudice
Prejudice of every kind — racial, religious, national or economic — destroys human dignity and must be removed.
Prayer
Prayer and Meditation
Bahá'ís pray daily and meditate on the sacred writings, drawing spiritual strength for a life of service.
“Whoso reciteth, in the privacy of his chamber, the verses revealed by God, the scattering angels of the Almighty will scatter abroad the fragrance of the words uttered by his mouth, and will cause the heart of every righteous man to throb.”
— Bahá'u'lláh, GleaningsBahá'u'lláh
“Let not a man glory in this, that he loves his country; let him rather glory in this, that he loves his kind.”
The Messenger
Bahá'u'lláh
Bahá'u'lláh (1817–1892) proclaimed that the age of humanity's collective maturity has come and that the unity of the human race is the great task of this age.
His writings, which fill many volumes, are the foundation of the Faith and are studied by Bahá'ís around the world.

The Covenant
Bahá'u'lláh appointed 'Abdu'l-Bahá as the interpreter of His teachings, and the Universal House of Justice now guides the community, preserving its unity.
